Lake Winnipesaukee

According to local lore, Winnipesaukee means either `smile of the Great Spirit,` or `beautiful water in a high place.` If you have ever visited Lake Winnipesaukee, you know that both of these names are very fitting.

The third largest lake in New England at 44,586 acres or about 72 square miles, Lake Winnipesaukee boasts a whopping 288 miles of shoreland. This includes 253 islands, ranging from six bridged islands (Black Cat, Governors, Long, Oak, Worcester, and Christmas/Paugus Bay) to tiny Becky`s Garden, which measures a mere 10 feet in diameter.

Lake Winnipesaukee is bordered by Tuftonboro, Wolfeboro, Meredith, Alton, Center Harbor, Gilford, Laconia, and Moultonborough. Each town is unique in it`s local flavor. Come and visit them all by car or by boat!
